Local Artists In Cape Town: Collaborating To Change Our City For Good

Hey there, art enthusiasts! Get ready to have your minds blown by the most incredible and inspiring street artists in Cape Town. We've done the legwork to find the best, thought-provoking, and downright impressive artists whose work will make you fall head over heels for the Mother City.

Street art is taking Cape Town by storm. By transforming decaying buildings and forgotten areas with colourful and inspiring images and messages, commissioned murals are not only boosting tourism but also community morale. And, let's be honest, it just makes the city look cool.

If you're visiting Cape Town, take the time to explore some of the city's impressive art and the hands behind them. Their work tells a unique story and provides a deeper appreciation for the city, its history, and its people. Here are some of our favourites:

Skumbuzo "Skubalisto" Vabaza

First up, we have Skumbuzo "Skubalisto" Vabaza, a true social justice warrior whose murals bring historical icons to life. From Brenda Fassie to Bob Marley, his work gives these legends a voice and allows us to connect with them on a personal level. We're obsessed with his fiery passion for the future of Africa's youth, and we're not just talking about his flaming-hot paint colours.

Falko One

Next, we have Falko One, a graffiti veteran who's been bringing South African street art to the next level for over two decades. His vibrant elephants are legendary, and his caricatures of faces, birds, and gorillas always catch you off-guard. Falko's work is the perfect example of how street art can turn a grungy alley into a vibrant and inspiring space.

Nardstar*

Nardstar* is another artist that's making waves in the street art universe - she was recently named one of the top 25 female street artists in the world by Huffington Post. Nardstar* aims to beautify and uplift neglected parts of the city with her bold and bright creations. Her unique style, with geometric shapes that will make your eyes pop out of your head, incorporates local flora and fauna, sparking constructive dialogue.

MacClements

Christopher MacClements is a true creative explorer who's always delving into the inner workings of his mind and the minds of others. He's a classically-trained architect who's now a highly sought-after artist. Collaborating with us at Neighbourgood East City, his art always inspires us with its vibrancy and fun-loving spirit. His playful and colourful style is perfect for anyone who wants to add a touch of spice to their day. It’s hard to miss some of these extraordinary pieces, as he’s worked on a number of commercial projects in and around Cape Town. Keep your eyes peeled while you’re touring the city, his pieces are everywhere.

Kim Bischofberger

Next up, we have Kim Bischofberger,a graphic designer and illustrator who creates a selection of stunning digital artworks that highlight the city's architectural angles and arches. Her bold use of colour and geometric shapes is simply mind-blowing, and her eye-catching compositions draw viewers in. Can you believe that this artwork she did for Neighbourgood Hill was her first shot as a mural artist? Yup, we got Kim to put together a series of mural art for us, and we weren’t disappointed.

Baz-Art

Last, but not least, we can’t talk about street art without bringing up Baz-Art. These guys are the Robin Hood of the art world, using their platform to commission amazing street art that challenges assumptions and enhances the environment. They believe that public art is a vital part of our shared history, culture, and memory. We couldn't agree more!

Their latest masterpiece, Cape Town Life, is an incredible collaboration between Studio Muti, local artists Dekor One and Mernette Swartz, and of course, Baz-Art. It's a colourful collage of all the things that make this city so special - from iconic landmarks to local flora and fauna, and of course, some of our favourite food and drink delicacies. The best part? It's located right here at Neighbourgood East City. Come on down and check it out.

There you have it, folks! These are just a few of the amazing street artists that call Cape Town their home. From the powerful social commentary of Skubalisto to the psychedelic elephants of Falko One, the geometric-esque style of Nardstar*, the creative collaboration of Maclemons, the architectural angles of Kim Bischofberger, to the vibrant public art pieces curated by Baz-Art, there is no shortage of talent to admire and appreciate in this vibrant city.

So, next time you're out and about in Cape Town, take a moment to appreciate the art that surrounds you. You might just find yourself feeling inspired by the work of these local artists. Maybe you'll even feel inspired to grab your own spray paint can and join the urban street art revolution. Stay safe, stay creative, and enjoy the beauty of Cape Town's street art scene!
