Hiking to the Crystal Pools

Approximately 500m from the entrance, you will encounter a sandy section where the path splits. Taking the left path leads you to the beach where the river mouth meets the ocean. Continuing straight will take you to the Crystal Pools.

Look out for square markers/signs with painted foot symbols along the path to ensure you're heading in the right direction. As you wind up the valley, you'll reach the first pool after approximately 45 minutes. The rocks on the left side of the pool provide ideal spots for warm-up jumps, ranging from 2m high (remember to check water depth).

Return to the main path and continue up the valley for another 5-10 minutes to reach the main pool. This oasis features a waterfall and a variety of rock jumps suitable for different levels of bravery. The jumps are located to the right of the waterfall, ranging from 6m to an exhilarating 13m. Before attempting any jumps, it's advisable to dip into the water first to ensure safety.

To access these jumps, retrace your steps on the path until you find a subtle turn-off leading to your right. The descent to the jumps involves a bit of scrambling. At the bottom, you'll find the third pool on your left and the launch point for the previous pool's rock jumps on your right.

The top pool offers several warm-up jumps, including a 4m jump and a 10m jump. However, if you're eager to dive right in, focus your attention to the right, where you'll find pool number 2 below you.

Remember, most of these jumps are quite high, and the return hike can be rugged. It's advisable to wear sturdy shoes to protect your feet.

The adventure doesn't end there! Follow the main path and continue until you reach a rope. Keep the rope on your right as you follow a clear path up the mountain. Once off the path, a short bushwhack and some boulder hopping will lead you to the final pool—a tranquil spot boasting panoramic views and a captivating three-tiered waterfall.

Take your time to savor the beauty of this remarkable place. Crystal Pools is not just a destination; it's an experience that will leave lasting memories. Soak up the sun, pick your favorite pool, and let the day unfold at its own pace. We hope to see you there soon!

Rock Jumping 101

To execute the perfect rock jump, position yourself at the edge of the rock, bend your knees, and jump away from the rock's edge. Focus on committing to the jump and avoid rotating backwards or hesitating mid-air. Keep your body straight and your arms close to your body to maintain stability. Remember to enter the water feet first and keep your body relaxed to minimize the impact.

Safety Precautions

  • Before attempting any jumps, always ensure the water depth is safe by checking it first.

  • Take a moment to assess the condition of the rocks and the surrounding area for any potential hazards.

  • It is important to avoid jumping under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • If you have any medical conditions or injuries that could be aggravated, it's best to avoid jumping.

  • Be mindful of your swimming abilities and only attempt jumps that you feel comfortable with.

  • Stay hydrated throughout your adventure and take breaks when needed.

  • Protect your skin by applying sunscreen regularly.

  • Remember to follow all the rules and regulations set by the Steenbras Nature Reserve.

Your safety is of utmost importance, so make informed decisions and exercise caution during your adventure.

Etiquette and Environmental Considerations

  • Help preserve the natural beauty of Crystal Pools for everyone to enjoy by leaving no trace. Please pack up all of your trash and dispose of it properly.

  • Show respect for wildlife and vegetation by avoiding any disturbance or damage.

  • Keep noise levels low to avoid causing disruptions to other hikers and wildlife.

  • Stick to designated paths and avoid trampling on sensitive areas.

  • Smoking and starting fires are prohibited in the nature reserve, so please refrain from doing so.

  • Be considerate of other hikers and share the space courteously.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

If you’re too jazzed up from the pools to go straight home, I definitely suggest checking out our What’s Happening map for a bunch of other really cool activities available in the area, such as Koel Baai/Kogel Bay Beach, Gordon’s Bay Jump Rock or an unbelievably good fish and chips shop called Ooskus Fisheries. Pick any, or all, of the above and you’ll be winning. Trust me.

By following these guidelines, you contribute to the preservation of Crystal Pools' natural environment for future visitors to appreciate.
