TOP HIKING TRAILS IN JONKERSHOEK

PANORAMA ROUTE

The Panorama Route is one of the most breathtaking trails in the Western Cape, offering both literal and figurative highs. The trail begins with a steep ascent from the gate along a jeep track, leading 5 km to the start of the Panorama Route and Waterfall trails. Limited parking is available, so arriving early is crucial to avoid an additional 5 km walk.

This trail requires you to start by 10 am to ensure you have enough time to enjoy the views and picnic along the way. The route winds through the mountains, reaching the stunning Dwarsberg plateau, where you'll feel as though you've entered an alternate universe.

For those with extra energy, a short detour to Guardian Peak offers unmatched views of the Cape Peninsula, from Table Mountain to Cape Point. On the return journey, you'll pass several small waterfalls, part of the Jonkershoek Waterfall Hike. Be sure to bring a swimsuit to refresh after this moderately challenging 17 km hike.

Beware of baboons, who may attempt to steal your food, drinks, or cameras, so keep an eye on your belongings.

Trail Distance: 17 km loop

Estimated Time: 6-8 hours

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

WATERFALL HIKE

The Waterfall Hike is a relatively easy trail perfect for groups of friends looking for a relaxing day in nature. If you start from the Jonkershoek gate, the hike can extend up to 15 km due to the jeep track.

This flat trail follows the Eerste River and leads to the first waterfall, with an optional detour for those with extra time. Continuing 2.5 km further, you'll reach the second, more stunning waterfall.

When the river crosses the path, take a right to head up through the river to the waterfall. Going straight will lead you onto the back half of the Panorama Route, bypassing the waterfall. This trail is ideal for warm days and offers plenty of opportunities for swimming and enjoying the scenery.

Note: Access to this trail closes at 2 pm.

Trail Distance: 6.4 km out and back

Estimated Time: 2 hours

Difficulty: Easy

THE SADDLE (SAALTJIE)

The Saddle trail offers a great alternative for those who want to avoid the busy Panorama and Waterfall trails. Starting and ending at the Jonkershoek gate, this trail heads upwards to 'the saddle,' where you'll find a hidden gem—a large picnic table and viewing deck. Pack a delicious lunch to enjoy at the top; my personal favorite is a sandwich from Giovanni’s Deli World in Green Point.

Though not an official Jonkershoek trail, The Saddle is less crowded and offers a peaceful hiking experience. Be sure to download maps before heading out, as the trail intersects with mountain bike paths and can be easy to navigate.

Trail Distance: 14.6 km loop

Estimated Time: 5-6 hours

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve offers a range of hiking experiences, from challenging climbs to leisurely strolls amidst stunning scenery. As you explore these trails, remember to respect the natural environment: keep noise levels down, leave no trace, and be mindful of the space. With its diverse trails and breathtaking views, Jonkershoek is sure to provide an unforgettable adventure.

Happy exploring!
